Humanities AI: AI as tool for historical research

Since the summer of 2025, I have been discussing with Ruth Mostern and Raja Adal at Pittsburgh University and Nadin Heé and Daniel Hedinger at Leipzig University in Germany on ways to experiment with the use of AI on large scale historical data. During the Age of Empires, a growing network of observatories collected data using modern instrumentation such as barometers, thermometers, and chronometers. How to collate and analyze growing amounts of data and in turn translate data into effective preventive measures became a transimperial problem. Our collaboration seeks to experiment with the use of AI on the overwhelming amount of information collected during this period.
